《陶瓷手記》為作者運用新出土的材料，改寫、增補過去二十年間所發表的隨興小品，將它們重新集結成書。全書分為四大篇章：

謝明良
臺灣臺北市人，祖籍臺南縣。1955年生。日本成城大學文學博士。曾任臺灣國立故宮博物院助理研究員（1985－1991）、國立臺灣大學藝術史研究所副教授（1992－1996）、教授（1997－2008）、特聘教授（2008）、終身特聘教授（2008－）、德國海德堡大學客座教授（2002）、胡適紀念講座（2008－2009），現任國立臺灣大學藝術史研究所教授兼所長。曾編集《中國陶瓷史論文索引1900－1994》（石頭出版社，1998），主要著作有《貿易陶瓷與文化史》（允晨出版社，2005；獲臺灣大學傑出學術專書獎）、《六朝陶瓷論集》（國立臺灣大學出版社，2006；獲臺灣大學優良學術專書獎）、《中國陶瓷史論集》（允晨出版社，2007；獲臺灣大學傑出學術專書獎）。

Notes on Ceramics.  Thoughts and Practices about History of Ceramics.

How do cultural relics with various background – unearthed archaeological materials on land, salvaged objects from sunk ships, and treasures preserved in museums and by collectors – become the key to unveil the mist of history? In this book, we will follow the thought of a ceramic historian, see how he traces the changes in styles, ornaments, and techniques of Chinese ceramics in the course of history with his insightful observations and bold reasoning based on the ceramic samples all around the world, finding the missing link connecting the trade network of Asia and Europe, taking us back to the world of ancient ceramics.


This book, entitled “Notes on Ceramics”, is a new collection of essays by the author in the past two decades, with modifications and amendments based on the newly excavated materials. It is divided into four main themes:

In the chapter of “Styles”, the author analyses the evolutionary tracks of ceramics in various eras and areas, discusses different functions and the fun of appreciating Chinese ceramics during the course of exchanging with East Asia, Middle East, and Europe. The issues on the history of cultural exchange are very intriguing. The “Skills of Ornamentation” part covers the relation between ornaments, skills and cultural implications of ceramics. It examines the link between techniques and practical functions in real-life as well, providing a comprehensive thinking on the genesis and alternations in ceramic ornamentation. “Trading Ceramics Excavated in Taiwan” starts from the ceramics unearthed in recent decades in Taiwan and further extends to the cultural relics from sunk ships and the collections of heirlooms spreading in Asia and Europe, restoring the trading ceramic history since the Age of Discovery, seeking a position of Taiwan in the global trading and consumption history. “Archaeology of Chinese Exporting Ceramics and Kilns” studies the history of Chinese exporting ceramics in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, discusses its rise and fall, and investigates issues on certain kilns associated with the validity of ceramic literatures and historical materials.

This book is consisted of more than 230,000 words, with more than 900 full-color illustrations. The author provides inspiring thoughts to the core of ceramic history, as well as presenting the state-of-art researches in academy. It is a masterpiece worth for ordinary people and scholars interested in ceramics and cultural exchanging history to read.
